In the run up to Valentine’s Day, romantic love takes centre stage. Hearts and Roses are everywhere, but did you know that the day before Valentine’s Day is also special?

13th February is Galentine’s Day, a day for platonic love to shine.

Galentine’s Day started in 2010, when in an episode of the sitcom Parks and Recreation Leslie Knope introduced it as the “best day of the year!” The positive message of celebrating friendship quickly gained popularity, and although it is not an official holiday, many people enjoy honouring this fun day.

Although the name implies this is only for women, this is not the case; although it initially started as "ladies celebrating ladies" to uplift and empower each other, anyone of any relationship status can celebrate. Galentine’s Day is all about friendship and platonic love, something we at Bunches definitely think should be celebrated!

How do you celebrate Galentine’s Day?

Because Galentine’s Day only started in 2010, there are no traditions; you can do what feels right for you! However, some fun ways you can celebrate the friendships in your life include:

• Going out for food. Whether you prefer a fun brunch or formal dinner, you can treat yourselves to some lovely food and carve out time to catch up with those you love.

• Sending a message. Whether it’s sending a quick text or posting a card, let your friends know you love them simply by telling them.

• Sending some flowers. Beautiful blooms aren’t exclusive to romance! Send your friends flowers that will make them smile, and show them just how much they mean to you.

• Having a craft day. It can be tricky to get everyone together, but the promise of a cup of tea and some fun crafts can be a good incentive! Why not press some flowers and use them to make and decorate different things, such as by creating pressed flower stickers? You can also make things intended for each other, so you all have lovely memories associated with your chosen craft. You could also make flower crowns or flower wreaths!

• Having everyone over. Whether it’s a coffee morning or an evening party, inviting friends over is an excuse to see the people you care about. Ask everyone to bring something to share (be it food, drinks, or snacks) so that everyone feels involved in the celebrations!
