Friendship is not only an important part of our lives, but a unique type of love. The Greeks called it philia, a platonic, affectionate love, and the world celebrates it on 30th July for World Friendship Day.
What is World Friendship Day?
World Friendship Day (also known as International Day of Friendship) is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the bonds of friendship and promoting messages of harmony and goodwill.
The idea behind this lovely day was that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
When did World Friendship Day begin?
World Friendship Day was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly. However, it originated over 50 years before this date!
The idea of a Friendship Day originally came from Joyce Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, in 1919. However, the celebration didn’t really take off until 1958, when a global day of celebration was suggested by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho.
Dr. Bracho proposed World Friendship Day during a dinner with friends in Paraguay on 20th July 1958, and this idea started the World Friendship Crusade. The group promotes friendship among all human beings, and after years of celebrating this special day and petitioning the UN, in 2011 the official day was created!
How do you celebrate World Friendship Day?
There are lots of ways you can celebrate World Friendship Day! You could:
Send your friends a message to let them know how important they are to you (or just to say hello!)
Arrange a get together. Whether it’s a meal out, a coffee, or just a group call, take time to catch up with your friends.
Give your friends a little gift; store-bought or home-made, a gift can be a boost for someone and remind them you care.
Book that event you’ve been planning in the group chat forever – you know the one!
You can also take the day as an opportunity to make more friends, by trying a new activity or hobby. You never know who you might meet!

Competition opens Thursday 30 July 2026 and the closing date for entries is midnight Thursday 6th August 2026.
One winners will be selected at random from the entries and the prize will be delivered to the winner. No cash alternative is available and the prize is non-transferable.
Competitions and prize draws are open to everyone aged 18 and over (excluding employees of Bunches Florapost Ltd, their families, or anyone else associated with the promotion).
Only one entry per person. Entries made on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed.
Prizes can only be delivered to addresses within the UK.
The winners will be chosen randomly from all legitimate entries after the closing date.
Bunches.co.uk reserves the right to reject fraudulent entries or those not compliant with the Terms and Conditions.
The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
The winners will be notified by email by Friday 7th August 2026. If the winners do not respond, Bunches.co.uk reserves the right to forfeit the allocation of the prize.
The winners may not use the prize in conjunction with any other offer, promotion or prize draw.
The prizes will be sent to the address provided by the entrants.
No responsibility can be accepted for entries that are lost, delayed, or which are not received for any reason.
