World Bee Day 2025
Bees are a vital part of our ecosystems. These little pollinators help our crops and foliage grow at a scale we humans couldn’t do without great cost; The Woodland Trust says that it would cost UK farmers £1.8 billion a year to manually pollinate their crops.
Did you know that here at Bunches, we have our own beehives? As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we welcomed nine beehives to Bunches HQ in 2023. We have approximately 50,000 honeybees supporting the local ecosystem, and we’re aiming to one day produce our own honey!
We love our bees, and so we want to spread the message of how important they are. Bees are in danger as a result of habitat loss, climate change, parasites and disease, invasive species, as well as stigma against them.
That’s why we want to encourage everyone to celebrate World Bee Day 2025! Created by the United Nations in 2018, every year on 20th May these wonderful creatures and the role they play in helping the planet is celebrated.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the date for World Bee Day “was chosen as it was the day Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern apiculture, was born. Janša came from a family of beekeepers in Slovenia, where beekeeping is an important agricultural activity with a long-standing tradition.”
This year's theme, "Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all", was chosen by the FAO as it “highlights the critical roles bees and other pollinators play in agrifood systems and the health of our planet's ecosystems.”
Some ways that you can help bees this World Bee Day include:
allowing lawn weeds to flower by mowing less often – you may already be participating in No Mow May, but if not, it’s never too late to start!
leaving a patch of unmown grass in your garden for wildflowers to grow
avoiding using harmful chemicals and pesticides in your garden
making a bee hotel
making a bee watering station
buying local honey/bee products
choosing organic, sustainable food
Making sustainable choices not only helps the bees, but our world in general. At Bunches, we are planet-friendly and proud; why not have a look at our plastic-free range on bunches.co.uk?
