What vase should I use? Understanding various vases

At Bunches, we put love, thought, and care into every arrangement. Whether you’re ordering letterbox or luxe flowers, we want to make sure you enjoy every petal.

However, to get the best from your blooms, it’s important that they’re placed in the right receptacle. We know that not everyone has a variety of vases to hand, but a normal glass won’t give your flowers their best chance to flourish unless you cut them to the right size!

Flowers need support and space to bloom, but it’s also important to make sure your flowers are at the correct height for the vase you’re using.

Trimming the flowers to the correct height will help your arrangements look their best. To do this, place your flowers against the vase, and cut them to approximately double the height of the vase. This works whether you’re using a vase or a pint glass!

However, we do recommend using a vase where possible to hold your beautiful blooms. To help you know the best vases to use and when to use them, we’ve compiled this list!

  1. Hourglass

Hourglass vases are vases that, well, are shaped like hourglasses. With a wide top and base and an inverted middle, these vases are great for medium to large bouquets (depending on the size of the vase!) They’re perfect for 360° arrangements, as crossing the stems across the base helps give your arrangement structure and supports all your flowers.

  1. Flared

Flared vases have a wide opening and a smaller base. If you want to do a front facing arrangement, this is the best option, as the wide opening supports your flower heads whilst the smaller base provides a strong structure.

  1. Column

Column (also known as cylinder) vases are the same with all the way down, although they may have a lip at the opening. These vases are perfect for tall bouquets and are great for popping your flowers in if you don’t have time to arrange them!

  1. Rounded

A rounded vase is the reverse of the hourglass; the opening and base are smaller, but the middle is wider, like a balloon. These are great for arrangements with fewer flowers to showcase their beauty, such as Posy arrangements.

  1. Bud

Bud vases are small vases intended to hold 1-2 stems. These are perfect for singular blooms which have been trimmed down and mean that you can keep your flowers alive for as long as possible. If one flower in a bouquet is particularly long-lasting, you can place it in a bud vase to enjoy it until it fades.

Although we don’t sell vases at Bunches, we hope this handy little guide helps your flowers look their best!
