What's going on with... Tulips
Tulips (originally known as Tulipa), are a popular choice for many floral arrangements, and the team at Bunches we love their bright colours and elegant beauty. Although they originated in central Asia, these vibrant flowers are more commonly associated with Holland.
Tulips and the Netherlands are a floral match made in heaven; according to the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, Holland’s climate and geology are the perfect combination for the flower, and as a result the country is well-known for its dazzling Tulip fields (such as the Keukenhof Tulip Garden) and annual Tulip Festival.
However, you may have noticed that the cost of Tulips has risen in recent months. Sadly, due to persistent rain in Holland last summer, Tulip farmers were forced to delay planting their bulbs (or did not do so at all) resulting in a shortage of blooms and an increase in price for the ones which were planted.
Heavy rain during the summer period is undoubtedly a symptom of climate change, and so it is as important as ever that we all do our part to help our planet. Here at Bunches, we are planet-friendly and proud; as well as using ethical flowers, our long-term goal is to be entirely plastic-free, and every day we make a conscious effort to work towards this goal.
Dani Turner, Customer Experience Director at Bunches, said of the situation:
“Tulips are a personal favourite of mine and just shout Spring, so I’m always keen to have them in our range. I will admit that I sharply inhaled breath when I saw the forecast prices for Tulips for Spring 2025.
“Sadly, wet weather in Holland in 2024 means that there is less supply in January 2025, so of course the price goes up. We’ve been paying 43% more per Tulip stem in January compared to last year, which is quite incredible. Of course, we’re unable to absorb all price increases - you will notice that our Tulips cost a little more than last year, but with lots of improvements in how we work here at Bunches HQ, we are able to work smarter and not increase our Tulip selling price by the extreme amount that the cost has increased by.
“We are delighted that we can keep selling amazing Tulips and delivering happiness with their bursts of colour and elegant shapes.”
Great value has always been a cornerstone to Bunches. It’s important to us that we keep our prices affordable for you, our valued customers, even when unforeseen circumstances impact an entire country’s blooms! Why not have a look at our collection to see what we do – from tantalising Tulips to our plastic-free range, you’re sure to find the perfect gift to send a smile to a loved one at bunches.co.uk
