What do you mean? Lilies
Lilies (also known as Lilium) are a beautiful and widely known flower. As well as being popular in arrangements, Lilies have a long and interesting history!
According to Britannica.com, Lilies are among the oldest cultivated plants. They have been used over time as medicine, decoration, food and art.
Lilies have also been associated with goddesses and religion. For example, in Greek mythology, the Lily was the favourite flower of Hera, Queen of the Gods. As well as this, during the Middle Ages, the white Madonna Lily was often associated with the Virgin Mary as a symbol of purity.
As much as there are various associations and uses for Lilies (although we should note that these flowers, though stunning, do not have medicinal properties and can in fact do harm if ingested, particularly for animals), there are differing meanings for different types of Lily!
Flowers and Their Meanings by Karen Azoulay delves into the symbolism of different coloured Lilies.
Whilst overall these beautiful blooms symbolise majesty, white Lilies represent purity and innocence, and yellow Lilies symbolise falsehood.
Because of the white Lily’s meaning, it is a popular flower for funerals in western cultures; in the context of funerals, the white Lily represents the hope that the departed soul may return to its original state of purity and innocence.
However, white Lilies are also used for weddings, representing the purity and innocence of the bride. The interpretation of their meaning makes the Lily a flower for a variety of occasions, but ultimately their elegant beauty is what makes them so appealing to us.
If you’re considering showing someone how majestic they are with fantastic flowers, why not look at our lovely selection of Lilies? Don’t worry, we haven’t included any yellow in our range!
