At Bunches, we want to make sure that when you send flowers, you know that they will be of the highest standard. We are passionate perfectionists, which means that we buy flowers from where they grow best.

But where is that? The perfect location differs for each type of flower, so there’s no one-place-fits-all for our stunning collections.

However, we want to highlight our responsibility to ensure that we work with farms who adopt the best agricultural practices, monitor costs and savings, and improve processes. This helps us manage the environmental impacts of flower farming, as well as ensuring working standards remain high.

Many of our blooms are ethical flowers sourced from Florverde Sustainable Flowers FSF) certified farms in regions found in parts of the developing world. Below we explore where the flowers our customers love the most come from.

Roses

Our Roses come from Colombia, Kenya and Ecuador. Because these countries are on the equator, there is an abundance of natural light which is vital for photosynthesis and healthy flower development.

High altitudes allow slower flower growth, making the stems stronger and the blooms larger – every 100m of additional altitude makes a difference in head size!

• Kenyan flower farms are at 1700-2000m

• Colombian flower farms are at 2000-2500m

• Ecuadorian flower farms are at 3000m

These altitudes mean that the temperature during the day is between 20-28 degrees, which is perfect for flower cultivation, while the nights are cooler and helps slow down plant respiration. This improves the quality of the flowers and makes them even more stunning!

Alstroemeria

The ever-popular Alstroemeria also comes from Colombia and Kenya. Their high-altitude climate and consistent daily temperatures of 15-24 degrees, not to mention the 12 hours of sunlight they regularly get, make them the perfect places to grow Alstroemeria.

The consistent sunlight ensures uniform and stable growing conditions without seasonal variations, whilst the soil in both countries is rich in nutrients so they are ideal for flower cultivation.

Carnations

Carnations are another Colombian traveller, for the same reasons as Roses and Alstroemeria. Colombia is perfect for year-round flower growing as ample rainfall and water sources help irrigation, making it the second-largest flower exporter in the world.

Freesias, Tulips, and Lilies
Although very different flowers, this trio has at least one thing in common: they come from Holland!

The temperatures and geology in Holland mean that it is ideal for these blooms. According to Holland.com’s article The Nether­lands, the land of flowers:

“The reason why flowers flourish [in Holland] more than in, for instance, the south of the Netherlands is a mysterious combination of acidity, sea air and sand.

“The humid, salty air, perfect aeration and acidity proved a match made in heaven. And the Dutch climate definitely helps. The cold ‘shocks’ flower bulbs, which they need to grow from a marble to the size of a small tennis ball. Regular rain ensures height and beauty. This is the weather preferred by spring flowering bulbs (such as tulips), whereas summer flowering bulbs prefer the dark.”
