Sunflowers: care tips and sharing your sunshine

Every spring, we decide to spread a little sunshine by including Sunflower seeds in your floral gifts for you to plant and enjoy!

We would love to see your Sunflowers, and give you the chance to win a bouquet with our Share your Sunshine competition.

Share your sunshine: how to enter

Simply plant your Sunflower seeds, watch them grow, and share a photo of your blooms for the chance to win a beautiful bouquet!

You can share your photos with us by tagging @bunchesuk on Facebook or Instagram, including the hashtag #BunchesSunshine, or email us at [email protected]

Please note that the competition will end on the 30th September 2026. Winners will be notified by email, and will receive a Florist's Choice bouquet. Only one entry per person.

Sunflower tips:

  • Sunflowers prefer to grow in well-drained soil and bask in the warm sun.

  • The best time to plant your seeds is after the chance of a spring frost has passed, usually between mid-April and the end of May.

  • Whilst April – May is the ideal time to plant your seeds, Sunflowers will still grow if planted in the early summer months; you’ll just need to wait a little longer for them!

  • You can usually expect to start seeing flowers in August.

How to grow your Sunflowers

You will need:

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Gardening gloves

  • A rake

  • A trowel

  • Plastic bottles

Growing your Sunflowers:

  1. Find a sunny spot in your garden for your Sunflowers, and remove weeds from this area with your trowel. Alternatively, you can start your Sunflower in a plant pot, putting 1 seed in a pot filled with peat-free compost.

  1. Rake the soil until it is a fine, crumbly texture.

  1. Plant each seed a couple of centimetres deep, and if you’re planting multiple seeds, leave 10cm to 45cm between each one to allow plenty of growing space.

  1. Once the seeds are in the soil, gently cover them over and water them.

  1. Cut the top off a plastic bottle and place over your seedlings to protect them from snails and slugs.

  1. To support growing Sunflowers, gently secure a cane to your Sunflower using some string to provide stability.

  1. Watch your Sunflowers grow tall!

We hope you love your seeds and the flowers that bloom from them; let us see how tall they grow by sharing your sunshine!
