We all know that February 14th is Valentine’s Day – it would be hard to miss it! However, did you know that 7th February is Rose Day?
Roses have been a symbol of love for centuries, although different colours of the bloom have different meanings.
Rose Day marks the beginning of Valentine’s Week, for those who think one day just isn’t enough! Whilst here at Bunches, we celebrate Roses every day (they’re one of our most popular flowers for a reason!), we’re delighted that they have their own day to showcase their beauty.
Here are ten fun facts about Roses to celebrate their special day!
The Latin name for the Rose is Rosa.
Roses are thought to be over thirty million years old, but were first cultivated around 5000 years ago in China.
There are over 300 accepted species of Rose.
Nobody has been able to develop a naturally blue Rose. Botanists have tried many methods, but so far the closest colour match is a light purple.
The most common Roses are Modern Roses (varieties bred after 1867).
The world’s oldest Rose, the Rose of Hildesheim (otherwise known as the Thousand-Year Rose), is thought to have been around since the 800s. It lives on the side of Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.
The world’s largest Rose bush is in Arizona, USA. It’s a specimen of the rose bush Lady Banks, and is not only 9ft tall but covers an area of 743 m²!
All rose petals are edible (as long as they’re grown organically!)
The national flower of England is the Tudor Rose, created by Henry VII at the end of the War of the Roses. The Tudor Rose, combining the red Rose of Lancashire and the white Rose of York, symbolised peace between the houses.
The Juliet Rose is the most expensive Rose ever created, costing its creator David Austin £2.3m during its 15-year development.
