Planet friendly and proud: Bunches’ solar panels
Looking after our planet isn’t something we take lightly. We know that it’s vital for everyone to do their part to reduce the impact of climate change and protect the environment; that’s why whether it’s our plastic-free range or being home to 500,000 bees to help pollinate our local ecosystem, we’re committed to becoming more sustainable every day.
One of the ways in which we’re trying to make a difference is by having solar panels here at Bunches HQ.
Nearly everyone has heard of solar power, but you may not know how it works. So, what is solar power?
According to The National Grid, “Solar power works by converting energy from the sun into power. There are two forms of energy generated from the sun for our use – electricity and heat.
“Both are generated through the use of solar panels.”
Because the Bunches family are all under one roof, from our magnificent warehouse staff to our friendly customer service team, we don’t have numerous buildings or use unnecessary extra energy. However, we knew that we could do better with the energy we did use, so a few years ago we decided to invest in solar panels.
But how do solar panels work? The National Grid tells us that “Solar panels are usually made from silicon, or another semiconductor material installed in a metal panel frame with a glass casing. When this material is exposed to photons of sunlight (very small packets of energy) it releases electrons and produces an electric charge.
This PV charge creates an electric current (specifically, direct current or DC), which is captured by the wiring in solar panels. This DC electricity is then converted to alternating current (AC) by an inverter. AC is the type of electrical current used when you plug appliances into normal wall sockets.”
In October 2024, we installed 387 solar panels to our roof. It took longer than expected, but if you ask us whether solar panels are worth it, the answer is a resounding “yes!”
Our solar panels have already improved our environmental impact:
33% of our energy consumption has come from our roof since October 2024, with this undoubtedly increasing over the summer months
We will save over 36T of CO2 emissions annually
Our annual emission reduction will be the equivalent of at least 1658 trees planted
We are able to give power back to the electric group
Our annual solar energy production is approximately 186.65 MWh
Currently, our solar panel savings are equivalent to a car driving 295km, and this will only get better!
Sustainability and being eco-friendly aren’t just buzzwords to us. We are committed to making a difference, and solar panels are just one of many ways we’re trying to help the planet and those in it.
