National Food Bank Day 2026
Every year on the first Friday of September, the UK observes National Food Bank Day, which is intended to recognise the work of food banks and raise awareness of food insecurity.
Today, food banks are still incredibly needed. In 2025, 2.6 million emergency food parcels were delivered by food banks in the Trussel Trust community, with over 900,000 parcels provided for children.
Every year, Bunches donates to our local food bank at Christmas, but we know that food banks need donations all year round. That’s why we also donate any flowers, plants and food that we can to food banks in our community throughout the year.
Our local food banks, as well as those across the country, do an amazing job helping those going through food insecurity. There are currently over 40,000 people who volunteer at food banks across the UK, an incredible number!
Below, we answer some questions you may have about food banks to create a better understanding of what they do, and how you can help.
What are food banks?
Food banks provide emergency food and practical support to people who have been left without enough money to live on.
People also get emotional support, as well as a reminder that they are not alone, and that someone understands.
How do food banks work?
Non-perishable, in-date food is donated to the food bank by individuals and communities.
Food is sorted and stored by volunteers.
Community organisations identify people needing support. GPs, teachers, health visitors and social workers partner with food banks so they can support people facing hardship and give them a food bank voucher to access emergency food.
The voucher is exchanged for emergency food at a food bank centre. They receive three days’ worth of emergency food, and are given further support.
What do food banks need most?
According to The Trussell Trust, each food bank will have different most-need items, it’s not just food! They may need non-food items such as toiletries as well. Please check your local food bank’s website, social media, the BanktheFood app, or contact them directly to find out what they need.
