Back in 2020, tablescaping became a popular pastime. House Beautiful states that tablescaping “refers to the Instagram trend of beautiful, and sometimes heavily decorated, tables.”

While usually the focus of tablescapes is the ornamental additions and crockery, here at Bunches we think that flowers could (and should!) also be the stars of the tablescaping show.

Let’s have a look at how to tablescape with a floral centrepiece!

Choose a theme
Decorating anything, especially a tablescape, is significantly easier if you’re working to a theme. Once you’ve picked this, you can figure out what colour scheme and decorations you want to complement the theme. It’s helpful to theme your tablescape around a specific holiday, season, or celebration (e.g. Christmas, summer, or an anniversary), but you can theme it around something as simple as your favourite colour.

For our example tablescape, we chose the theme of “Holiday Wishes”.

Choose a colour scheme
Whether you’re aiming for complementary colours or stark contrasts, pick a main colour (or two!) and find out which colours work with it. The colour wheel is a great way of figuring out what colours to pick, and you can then get started creating your tablescape.

For our theme, the colours are dark red and green, complimented by golden browns.

Choose your centrepiece
Once you have a colour scheme, choose a centrepiece. Any of our beautiful hand-tied bouquets or lovely flower arrangements could inspire a tablescape, or you could use a dried flower wreath as the centre of attention!

If you’re struggling to pick a theme or colour scheme, you can always create your tablescape based on the centrepiece!

For our tablescape, we used Christmas Foliage.*

Layer up!
Understandably, when tablescaping it’s recommended to start with the bottom layer and work your way up.

Oka.com recommends finding a tablecloth/linen as your base, and then add your placemats. Add a dinner plate, place a small plate or bowl for your starter, and then put cutlery on either side. Place a napkin on top for an extra flourish!

Make sure to remember suitable glasses for your drinks; whether it’s water, wine, or anything else, make sure there’s a receptacle for it.

Remember, not everything has to be the same; you can mix styles, colours, and patterns to your heart’s content.

Decorate away!

Now that you have the pillars of your tablescape ready, you can add extras. Whether it’s candlesticks, ribbon, name cards, fruit, flora, fauna or fairy lights, you can add little touches to complete your tablescape.

You could also highlight your centrepiece with stems, leaves and petals pruned from your bouquet when arranging the bouquet in the vase.

Alternatively, you can use the bouquet as decoration rather than a centrepiece, placing the stems around the table to decorate.

Voila!

You have a beautiful tablescape, ready for any occasion.

Tablescaping doesn’t have to be expansive or excessive; it can be as simple or extravagant as you want, as long as you have fun!
