Kande, Malawi (October 2011)
Kande, Malawi (October 2011) A team of Bunches’ staff recently had the opportunity to visit one of the areas in Malawi which is benefitting from Bunches support. On 1st October, Will, Julie, Dan, Jenny and Pat flew to Lilongwe and travelled on from there to the remote village of Kande; located next to Lake Malawi, where Malaria and HIV are both huge local issues. The team travelled with the charity Links International and got involved with Micro Enterprise development projects, ongoing healthcare training, sanitation projects and saw firsthand how Bunches is making a difference and creating smiles in the area. The week was an emotional one for the team, who were overwhelmed by the friendliness of the locals, their massive sense of community spirit and commitment to bettering the lives of people living in poverty within their village. The training involved local chiefs, pastors and leaders; many of whom walked for hours to gather information to pass onto their communities. We also visited a HIV clinic, primary school and had a local village tour to see the problems and how Bunches has helped kick-start agricultural projects, funded water filters to provide clean drinking water and hand washing facilities to prevent the spread of diseases. The team also purchased the materials needed to repair three water bore holes and brought the good news that more water filters and mosquito nets were to be provided through Links International. The need for nets was very sadly highlighted by the death of a 6 year old girl from the effects of Malaria whilst we were there, which is a totally preventable parasite. Bunches and Links International has an ongoing commitment to Malawi and funds will continue to be provided to help sustainable projects which will change people’s lives and transform communities. We’ll keep you posted with progress! Pictures and a video diary coming soon!...
