Columbia Fish and Hen Farms (2009)
Bunches is helping to fund a Links International initiative helping Colombian children at risk through poverty, neglect or abuse. They have worked with them and come up with creative solutions for two key issues – nutrition and sustainable income.
The project is situated on a farm in Bogota which has a small lake currently used to collect rainwater for harvesting and irrigation. Government permission has been granted to convert the lake into a fish farm and to run a hen-breeding programme.
Fish Farm - Research has been undertaken to ascertain which breed of fish are most suited to the climate and to the breeding programme. The project will take 6 months to complete. A £3000 investment in the fish farm will:
- Convert the lake into a purpose-built fish farm
- Enable adequate stock (fish) and fish food to be purchased for the breeding programme
- Breed fish for consumption and provide a sustainable balanced diet for children and their families at risk
- Enable excess fish to be sold for profit generating a sustainable income for the organisation
Hen Breeding - In addition to the lake there is adequate farmland to run a hen breeding programme. A £1,500 investment in the breeding programme will:
- Provide building materials and labour for a purpose-built breeding pen
- Purchase stock (hens) and adequate feed for the breeding programme
- Breed hens and produce eggs for consumption and provide a sustainable balanced diet for children and their families at risk
- Enable excess meat and eggs to be sold for profit generating a sustainable income for the organisation
