He loves me, he loves me not...

Petals

Love is in the air here at Bunches HQ on the run up to the most romantic day of the year - Valentine's Day! (That's 14th February for all you men who have somehow managed to escape it so far!) Things have been getting pretty busy in our sales office and factory, with all staff ensuring the thousands of orders we receive are carefully packed and sent to loved ones throughout the UK. The personal messages to accompany bouquets at this time of year send us all a bit gooey, and we have even had a few marriage proposals in previous years!

So, what is the meaning behind the flowers you receive this Valentine's Day? Is the man in your life declaring his undying love or does he just wants to be good friends..?

Roses are a Valentine's classic, and generally a winner in the romance stakes with red representing love, pink for admiration, yellow for joy, white for devotion and orange for desire. Orchids make a great long-lasting Valentine's gift which symbolise refined beauty and Tulips are the perfect Valentine's alternative, with red expressing passion and white for purity.

However, be warned if you receive a bouquet of yellow Tulips or bronze coloured Chrysanthemums which could sadly mean your love is unrequited... but on the positive side, it could spark the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Going, Going, Gone...

Petals

You may have wondered where we get our lovely flowers from here at Bunches..?  Well, we buy the majority from the Aalsmeer flower auction in Amsterdam, which is the biggest trade centre of flowers in the world, selling 21 million flowers and plants every day.  This is where blooms from across the globe are bid for in a huge auction room before they arrive here at Bunches HQ in Newstead, Nottinghamshire.

The Flora Holland Centre which is home to the auction room and hi-tech flower storage facility is incredibly the size of Monaco and is the world's second largest complex of buildings after the Pentagon in Washington.  Members of staff even have bikes so they can get from one end of the building to the other!

Quality is the number one priority at Bunches from the instant the flowers are bought in Amsterdam to the moment we pack and send them out to our customers.  Each bloom is checked at least four times before it leaves our factory (which is rather more modest in size!) to ensure every bouquet we send arrives in perfect condition!

Here are a couple of photos of the auction...

Creating Smiles

At Bunches we love to deliver beautiful flowers that make a difference to people's days but we also love to make a real difference to those that are far less fortunate than us. So during Christmas we partnered with DCI Trust to feed 5,000 of the world’s poorest in: Liberia, Uganda, Haiti, Lira, Amazon, Peru, Cuba and The Andes. We feel very privileged to be able to be a part of something so brilliant, making those who have so little feel special, important and cared for. We've attached a few picture from the Christmas parties that we funded.

The Power of Flowers!

At Bunches we've always known that flowers are good for you, but now we have the scientific report to prove it! At the beginning of last year, some hospitals decided to ban flowers in wards due to claims that they harboured bacteria, creating an unhealthy environment. However, a new report published by the British Medical Journal in December has shown that flowers are actually beneficial to patient's recovery process by reducing heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety as well as creating 'positive feelings'.

If you are planning on sending a loved one a gorgeous Bunches bouquet to wish them a speedy recovery in hospital, we recommend you check their policy before you order and opt for one of our lovely bag arrangements which contain a clever water cube. This ensures the blooms receive a constant drink and don’t need to be displayed in a vase which could lead to spillages - perfect!
